What To Do If You Find Asbestos In Your Business Or Home

Once you’ve found asbestos products in your home or business, it can sometimes be difficult to decide what to do. Should you call an asbestos removal company straight away, or try and clear it away yourself, so that the problem is fixed quicker? Below, we give advice on what to do with asbestos at different levels of disrepair.

Asbestos materials in good condition – If an asbestos sheet is in good condition, and not in a position where it could be easily damaged, it is often best left where it is. The removal of an asbestos sheet can sometimes lead to higher levels of fibres being released into the air.

Asbestos materials that are slightly damaged – Sometimes an asbestos material can be easily repaired with specialist paint or sealant. As above, where possible, it is best to leave asbestos alone. Avoid causing any additional damage to the materials.

Asbestos materials that are badly damaged – Once asbestos becomes damaged or starts deteriorating, it is considered to be a high risk. It is important to call an asbestos removal company and get it removed as soon as possible. Asbestos materials must always be removed by a licensed contractor.

If you are unsure of anything, contact an asbestos removal company  who will be able to conduct a survey of your building.

If you must move any amount of asbestos waste, ensure it is wet, and then wrap it in strong plastic. Label it, and then dispose of it in accordance with your local councils rules (in most cases, you are not allowed to use a regular dustbin).
