What is spray on asbestos and where is it commonly found?
Spray on asbestos, also known as asbestos sprayed coating, is a material that contains a high concentration of asbestos fibres and is sprayed onto surfaces for either fireproofing, insulation, or soundproofing purposes.
Asbestos sprayed coating is often found on ceilings, steel beams, and walls in older buildings. It was commonly used in commercial and industrial settings such as factories and warehouses, where fire resistance and soundproofing were important.
Why is sprayed asbestos hazardous?
Sprayed asbestos is very dangerous as it can easily release fibres into the air when disturbed and these said fibres can pose a very severe health risk if inhaled.
How is an asbestos sprayed coating safely removed?
Removing textured sprayed asbestos involves sealing off the area, and using specialised techniques to minimise any fibre release. Only licensed asbestos professionals like MAS should undertake this work so please get in touch via [email protected] or 0115 932 6521 if you are in need of any asbestos removal.
Can asbestos sprayed coatings be sealed instead of removed?
In some cases, encapsulation may be an option to seal the asbestos and prevent any possible fibre release and a professional assessment will be required to determine if this is the best approach.
